Seven Top Solutions for embedding Corporate Responsibility
in your organisation
After extensive research and experience among Sustainability / Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) managers, we have determined seven key areas
of need, which we are best placed to meet. These solutions generate powerful
results in truly embedding CSR.
1. CSR reporting
A client recently asked us to write a report for them. We replied that,
instead of writing the report, we would facilitate a process to help senior
managers and the employee body write the report themselves. The result was
not just a highly persuasive document, but a level of understanding of commitment
unprecedented in the organisation. This is our approach to CSR reporting.
With you, we will manage the report-writing process from beginning-to-end,
in partnership with the very people who will be key to implementing what
the report promises. Through our associations with design houses, our understanding
of various reporting initiatives and our project management expertise, we
will ensure that the document is one you can be proud of.
2. Capitalising on international diversity
Many CSR managers – particularly of global companies or post-merger – face
challenges working with the international diversity of attitudes and approaches
to CSR in their teams, workforce and stakeholders. We have a prestigious
track record in consulting and training in diversity issues, with government
and multinational corporates. By learning about different people’s
unique experiences, attitudes and talents, we create new ways of achieving
results together. Through a combination of coaching, consulting, training
and group facilitation, we will help you bridge the differences and see this
diversity as strength. The result: aligned, energised partners around the
globe pulling in the direction of a unified CSR vision.
3. Coaching for change
Many CSR managers have the technical know-how to perform their jobs, but
are continually confronted (and often baffled!) with the change management
and political challenges which come with the job. Our coaches are experienced
in coaching senior executives in a variety of fields – working with
people who are already successful to be even more effective. We now offer
this to CSR managers. Through regular telephone or face-to-face sessions
(and ongoing availability of our coaches), we will help you to maintain focus
on your priorities, navigate the complexity, diversity and politics of your
organisation, prepare for encounters with senior management so that you build
strong commitment, think creatively about CSR problems, manage your teams
and build your personal effectiveness. There are many coaches available in
the market. What makes our offering unique is that we understand organisational
change, leadership, personal effectiveness and CSR issues. Because it only
takes 1-2 hours per week, this is a relatively inexpensive intervention which
can substantially improve your CSR impact.
4. Developing leaders for CSR
Leadership development forms an important part of the sustainability agenda
in two ways. First, those at the core of the sustainability strategy (the
CSR manager and team) need to be powerful leaders to bring about the change
in the organisation. And second, leaders throughout the organisation need
to develop their leadership skills in a way that builds all three bottom
lines of sustainability and corporate responsibility. As pioneers of innovative
and highly effective leadership development programmes, often involving up
to one-third of major organisations, we develop just such a programme within
your organisation. Our approach is experiential, behaviour-focused and results-oriented.
You will benefit from having more leaders who can ground their leadership
in clear values, see the big picture, adopt a broader sense of accountability,
make linkages between their work and CSR, and powerfully implement change
in their areas.
5. Researching and building the business case
The “business case” for CSR is often a vital building-block
to commitment from employees, shareholders and senior managers. Together
with our network of technical specialists in environmental, social development,
human rights and economics, we will work with you to build a compelling case
for implementing your CSR vision – addressing all the typical individual
and organisational drivers of this: short-term economic benefits, long-term
shareholder return, reputation management, brand equity, values-based business
management and moral motivations. Our core strength is managing change and
overcoming resistance to change. We will build a business case which will
effectively win over key decision-makers.
6. Group facilitation and hosting
CSR work often comes down to engaging the right people to address challenges
together. Our wealth of experience in designing and facilitating group processes
will help you to make the most from this engagement. Whether you need a skilled
facilitator to host a meeting of your CSR team or network, to run a strategic
planning session with your senior management, or to host a gathering of up
to 100 stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, we can provide the right facilitator.
We are experienced practitioners in approaches including Open Space Technology
and other large-group interventions, and can bring a variety of creative
thinking and problem-solving methods and the practical implementation of
systems thinking. Asking one of our facilitators to plan and host your processes
will accelerate the results they yield, and deepen the level of communication,
commitment and trust which they generate.
7. CSR training and communications
Wherever your CSR strategy sits in the organisation, implementing it is
always a shared responsibility of senior and middle managers, front-line
employees at the coal-face around your operations, and even suppliers and
customers. To win these people over, you need to train and communicate in
a way that not only builds knowledge, skills and techniques, but which wins
over hearts and minds. We will review your existing communications and work
with you to develop an integrated communications strategy and individual
communication tools, training programmes or e-learning modules, to bring
about this effective shift in people’s attitudes and behaviours. We
have robust evaluation methodology which will allow you to measure the impact
of this communication and training.
